Open mics... You see them listed in arts and entertainment line-ups for various clubs and bars around town. But what exactly are they? Do they have rules or do's and don'ts?

Brian will offer his unique perspective on this, being a musican who is truely addicted to Open Mic'n. He'll explain how you, and your audience, can have a good experience

I have been participating in a project called Postcrossing for the past year and it recently occurred to me that I was trying to communicate myself to someone I'd never met, to somewhere I'd probably never been, in 50 words or less.

Then I learned about a project called Mysterious Letters in which two people decided to write a letter to everyone in the world, beginning with the small town of Cushendall, Ireland (pop. 467). What results in their notes are whimsical, endearing notes of adoration to complete strangers. Brilliant!

All of this I find interesting considering that:
- Only 70-75% of what is said in person is actually communicated via verbal & non-verbal cues
- Only 30% is actually communicated if speaking over the phone, and
- Only 7% is communicated via email

So where does that leave written correspondence, much less a postcard?

We pilot our lives based on a thousand assumptions every day. They feel like real facts - things to make decisions based upon. The thing is, life is a prism and at any given moment there is a totally different angle through which to view reality. That other view might serve our larger goals way better - and there it is, right there, for the taking! It happens all the time in parenting, business, marriage and friendships. Let's take the mundane as well as the big events of life and look at it through different facets to see how "facts" can replace "facts" to build a new story... and change everything.

I hate to run.

But since I started running in March 2009 I've lost 25 pounds and dropped 3 pants sizes. I've made goals, and attained them. And I still have more goals planned...

Along the way I've been supported by friends and hopefully inspired others to set better fitness goals. During this talk I'll describe my personal challenges and triumphs, funny moments, and why I started running (even though I hate it).

I'll also talk a little bit about body image and womens' perception of what they see in the mirror in hopes that the women in the audience will feel better about their bodies and men will understand why our reflection can make us cry.

From Ann Jillian (if you get that reference I'll give you a dollar) to Wilford Brimley we've heard how much it sucks to be diabetic.

Well...the truth is they're right! Being diabetic does suck, whether it's paying for supplies, watching what you eat, or having to listen to other people tell you how to be a "better diabetic" it can get a little overwhelming.

But, luckily there are people like me who still know how to have a good time.

After this presentation you will, hopefully, get a glimpse of what it "really" means to be a Type 1 diabetic and how you can help.
